Papaya- Variety information

Co-2: It is a selection purified from a local type at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore. Fruits are medium-sized, obovate, greenish yellow, ridged at the apex, flesh red in colour, soft to firm, moderately juicy with good keeping-quality. It is a suitable type for extraction of papain. It gives 4-6g dried papain/fruit or 250-300 kg papain/ha.

Co-5: It is a variety released from TNAU, Coimbatore. It is a selection from Washington and isolated for its high papain production. It produces consistently 14-15 g dry papain/fruit. It gives 75-80 fruits/tree in two years with an average yield of 1,500-1,600 kg dried papain/ha.

Co-7: It is a variety released from TNAU, Coimbatore. Oblong fruits. Flesh is red, firm. Green with sparse yellow tint

Coorg Honey Dew: It is a chance seedling of Honey Dew and is cultivated for table as well as processing purpose. The variety bears greenish-yellow oblong-shaped fruits with orange thick flesh and good flavour. The variety can be maintained pure by growing in isolation. The flesh is thick with good flavor. The flesh is orange-yellow coloured and moderately soft and juicy. Due to its excellent fruit quality it fetches good market value.

Honey Dew: It is also known under the name Madhu Bindu.  Popular variety in western as well as northern parts of India. Fruits are medium sized, oval in shape; these are very sweet in taste having pleasant flavour. The bearing is heavy. Keeping quality of fruit is medium and the fruit bears less number of seeds.

Pusa Dwarf: It is a dioecious variety with dwarf plants and medium-sized (1-2 kg) oval fruits. The plant starts bearing from 25 to 30 cm above-ground level and is comparatively drought hardy. This variety is very suitable for high- It is a dwarf-statured delicious variety with good yield. The fruits are medium and the shape is oval. The flesh is melting, sweet and red orange in colour and preferred by the consumers for high density planting.

Pusa Giant: It is a variety of papaya developed from IARI Regional Station at Pusa. Plants are vigorous, sturdy and tolerant to strong wind. It is a dioecious cultivar with big-sized (2.5-3 kg) fruits, suitable for canning industry.

Pusa Nanha: It is a variety of papaya developed from IARI Regional Station at Pusa. It is an extremely dwarf variety suitable for Kitchen garden, pots and roof-top cultivation. This is ideal for high-density planting.

Solo: It is a famous variety from Hawaii Islands. The variety is named solo as one man can easily consume one fruit. The fruits are small and pear shaped. Fruits are of excellent in quality and free from unpleasant odour. The flesh is pink in colour.  It is a table purpose variety. The fruits are small with deep pink pulp and a sweet taste. Excellent for kitchen garden.

Surya: It is a hybrid variety from IIHR, Banglore. `Surya’, which is a cross between `Sunrise Solo’ and `Pink Flesh Sweet’. It produces medium size fruits of 600-800 gram with red pulp about 3.0-3.5 cm thick and a smaller fruit cavity. The hybrid is gynodioecious and does not require male plants for pollination. The seedlings for planting. If planted at a spacing of `6×6’ may yield 48-58 tonnes papaya per acre.

Washington: It is a table purpose variety. Fruits are round to ovate, medium-large in size with few seeds. When ripe, skin attains a bright yellow colour. It is sweet having pleasing flavour. The average weight of fruit ranges from 1.5-2.0 kg. Male and female plants are separate.
