Sesame- Planting activities

Sesame is propagated through seeds. The recommended seed rate is 1.6-2 kg/acre. The best season of planting is August to December in uplands and December to April in low lands.

Sesame grows in well-drained, sandy loam soils. Coarse sandy soils and soils of alkaline and saline nature are not suited for the crop.

The field is prepared well by 2-4 ploughing. Lime or dolomite @ 1-3 kg/cent has to be applied depending on soil acidity. Organic manure @ 20 kg/cent is recommended at the time of last ploughing.

The seeds are broadcasted after mixing with 2-3 times of its volume with sand. It is followed by harrowing to cover the seed with soil.

Apply recommended basal dose of fertilizers at the time of planting. A time lag of ten days should be given between application of lime and fertilizers.
