Symptom


Pink larva enters into the stem and and feeds on the internal tissues causing dead heart symptom. Larva: Pinkish brown with a reddish brown head. (C.O: Sesamia inferens).

Management

Avoid over use of nitrogenous fertilizers.

Symptom


Nymphs and adults suck the juice from the grains at milky stage. The damaged grains shrink and turn black in colour, and later become chaffy. Large number of nymphs and adults are seen on the ear head. Adults: Male is green in colour. Female is green with a brown margin (C.O: Calocoris angustatus).

Management

Apply Neem seed kernel extract (50 gram/litre of water), Azadirachtin 1% (10 ml/litre of water).

Symptom


Yellowing of leaves. Aphid colonies present on the central leaf whorl and ears. Presence of ants. Adult are yellow coloured with dark green legs. A strong point of this pest lies in its very quick multiplication. (C.O: Rhopalosiphum maidis).

Management

Spray tobacco decoction or neem oil-garlic emulsion (20 ml neem oil+ 20 gram garlic paste+ 5 gram bar soap dissolved in one litre of water) or Nattapoochedi (Hyptis suaveolens) emulsion (100 gram/ litre of water) or Neem Seed Kernal Extract (50 gram/litre of water). Spray Lecanicillium lecanii (synonym Verticillium lecanii) (20 gram/litre of water). Release green lacewing bugs (50,000 eggs/ha).

Symptom


The caterpillar causes defoliation in the nursery. Larva is brownish green with wavy lines on dorsal surface and lateral yellow stripes. (C.O: Spodoptera exigua)

Management

Remove weeds and stubbles after harvesting. Avoid green manure and apply FYM to prevent cutworm egg laying. Use Steinernema carpocapsae entomopathogenic nematode or Beauveria bassiana (20 gram/litre of water) at emergenge of cutworm.

Before one week of sowing, apply Bacillus thuringienesis + Rice husk in main field to control cutworm. Release Trichogramma parasitoid weekly once for 3 weeks continuously to control cutworm eggs.

Spray Neem seed kernel extract (50 gram/litre of water. Spray 20 gram bird pepper (kandari) extract in 1 litre cow’s urine and 10 litre of water.
