Rice Planting activities – Transplanted crop

Rice is propagated through seeds. The seed rate for transplanting is 24-34 kg/acre.

The land should be prepared well by thorough ploughing and leveling. The bunds should be strengthened for irrigational purpose and be cleared of weeds.

Apply the first dose of lime as basal dressing at the time of first ploughing (140 kg/acre).

Apply organic manure in the form of farmyard manure or compost or green leaf (5 tones/ha) and incorporate into the soil while ploughing.

The seeds should have 80 % germination and should be free from dormancy. The seeds are sown in nursery for transplantation.

Dress/ wet the seeds with Pseudomonas (10 gram/kg of seeds) before sowing or dip the seedlings in Pseudomonas solution (250 gram in 750 ml of water) for 30 minutes before planting to protect against diseases.

In transplanting, the seedlings are ready to be pulled out when they attain the stage of 4-5 leaves, about 18 Days After Sowing (DAS) for short duration varieties and 20-25 DAS for medium duration varieties.

Transplant seedlings @ 2-3 seedlings per hill in rows.Transplant seedlings at a depth of 3-4 cm. For short duration varieties space at 15cm x 10 cm and for medium duration varieties 20cm X 15 cm.

In transplanted rice, apply any of the following Butachlor 50 EC (1 litre/ acre) at 0-6 days after transplanting or Pretilachlor 50 EC (600 ml/acre) (0-6days after transplanting) or Pretilachlor+ Bensulfuron methyl (0.6+0.06 WP)(4 kg/acre) (0-6days after transplanting) or Pyrazosulfuron ethyl 10 WP (100 gram/acre) (0-6days after transplanting) to control weeds.

Apply recommended basal dose of fertilizers at the time of planting. A time lag of ten days should be given between application of lime and fertilizers.

Maintain water level at about 1.5 cm during transplanting. Thereafter increase it gradually to about 5 cm until maximum tillering stage
