Apple- Planting activities

Apple is propagated through budding or whip and tongue method of grafting. Grafting is done on crab apple seedlings. Yellow newton or golden delicious varieties are used as root stock.

Pits of size 60 x 60 x 60 cm are dug at a spacing of 5 m x 5 m. The grafted plants are planted with graft union above soil level. Around 160 plants come in an acre.

For effective fruit set pollinating varieties are inter-planted. Usually one in six or one in nine plants is used as pollinizer in self-unfruitful varieties.

Regular irrigation should be given for about two years in the initial years.
