Coconut-Harvest and storage
Coconut reaches the harvesting stage by about 4-5 years after planting. The nuts take around 12 months to reach harvest stage. All nuts in a bunch mature at the same time and uniformity.
Coconut is harvested when the colour of nuts changes from green to yellowish or brownish green. The mature fruit produces peculiar metabolic sound on thumping.
Coconut for ball copra and coarse coir are harvested only when they are fully ripe.
Nuts for culinary purposes, for making `cup’ copra and good-quality fibre are harvested at the age of about 11 months.
Coconuts for tender nuts are harvested at six to seven months stage.
Harvesting is done by climbing the palm. Generally, harvesting is done once in 45 to 60 days interval.
