Jack fruit-Harvest and storage
Jack takes 4-8 years from planting to reach bearing stage. The fruiting season is from January-February to May-June. The fruit mature in about 180 to 270 days after flowering.
On maturity fruit colour changes from green to pale green. A dull, hollow sound is produced when the fruit is tapped by the finger. Fruit spines become well developed and wide spaced. The last leaf of the peduncle turns yellows at the time of maturity. An aromatic smell also develops.
The fruits are cut and lowered carefully to avoid much damage. The fruit weight varies from 10 to 30 kg. The average yield from one tree is about 50 fruits per year.
